HUD 184 Loans

HUD 184 home loans provide beneficial mortgage options to Native American and Alaskan Native tribal members.

What is a Section 184 Loan?

Guaranteed by the Office of Loan Guarantee within HUD’s Office of Native American Programs, the Section 184 Loan Program was designed to provide access to mortgage financing to Native American and Alaskan Native tribal members.

Who is Eligible?

Section 184 home loans are reserved for members of Native American and Alaskan tribes. Eligible borrowers must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe or tribally designated housing entity. The list of federally recognized tribes can be found on the HUD website. Typically, your tribe will provide a card or letter providing your enrollment status.

Benefits of Section 184 Loans

Section 184 Loans provide eligible borrowers with low interest rates and low down payment options. For loans over $50,000, the down payment amount can be as low as 2.25%. If your loan amount is under $50,000, your down payment is 1.25%. Also, Section 184 Loans do not require borrowers to pay a mortgage insurance premium each month.
